Teresa Louise Johnson - dReadCon Author Spotlight

Thank you so much for joining us at our second annual dReadCon event, happening this September 13! We are so excited to have you attend. Please tell us about yourself and where we can find you.

Teresa Louise Johnson is a fantasy writer whose book, Boneyard Café, released in 2024. Her novella, Dark Matter, released in June 2025, and book two of the Boneyard Café series, The Seven, is slated for Fall 2025. Boneyard Café, Dark Matter, and hopefully The Seven will be offered at dReadcon, along with other related merch. Her previously published book, Fire Island, was written as part of her Master's degree requirements.

When Teresa isn’t writing or reading, she teaches yoga. Because of that, she incorporates mindfulness and yoga philosophy into her novels and into her social media pages, and her goal is to create a community with her readers.

She offers her readers dark fantasy with urban elements, interesting, varied characters and creatures, and the chance to unravel her worlds over her series and standalone novels. In her stories, readers will find friendship, romantic love, and sisterly love. Lastly, they’ll get to know creepy, cruel villains and see what happens when good goes up against evil.

You can find Teresa on Instagram and Tiktok as @teresa_breakonthrough.

Do you have a favourite character you have written? If so, what book are they in and will it be at dReadCon?

Ren is quickly becoming a favourite character. She’s in Boneyard Café (definitely for sale at dReadCon) and The Seven (tentatively at dReadCon.) Even though Bone Connector abducts her and destroys her life, she builds it back into something powerful and admirable.

If you could co-write a story with any famous monster (Dracula, Frankenstein, etc.), who would it be?

I’d co-write a story with Frankenstein. His philosophical mind speaks to me, and I think we’d have meaningful things to say about how we view the world.

How do you balance fear and deeper themes in your writing?

I balance dark themes in my writing with hope. As a yoga teacher, I am all about balance, and I know a good deal about working through my shadow self to heal.

Has writing ever made you confront personal fears or experiences?

Yes. Boneyard Café has an autobiographical element to it; I’ve faced some dark moments in the past few years and survived them, just like my characters.

Do you have any writing rituals that help you get into the mindset for writing dark fiction?

I read a lot, I listen to music, and if I am not inspired, I haul my laptop, headphones, and notes to a fave coffee shop for a new perspective. In yoga, when you need a new life perspective, you get into an inverted pose and look at the world upside down. It changes everything and can be extremely inspiring. In the same way, when I leave my familiar surroundings, my creative mind gets a jumpstart.

What type of music, if any, do you listen to while writing?

I make playlists for my books and for writing inspiration (I make playlists for everything.) I like upbeat tracks, but my writing playlist ranges from Agnes Obel to Chill Bump to Pitbull to The Rolling Stones to Spiritual Moment.
